James Salerno Strengthens Salerno Pastoral’s Brahman Genetics at Gympie Brahman Female Sale

Salerno Pastoral Makes a Mark at Gympie Brahman Female Sale
James Salerno, owner and operator of Salerno Pastoral, continues to build a reputation for excellence in Brahman breeding. At the recent Gympie Brahman Female Sale, Salerno Pastoral secured top-tier genetics, reinforcing its commitment to quality breeding and sustainable cattle operations.

Among the standout purchases was the high-profile Brahman grey heifer, Mianna Miss Appollo 107/3, which Salerno purchased for $20,000. In addition, the operation secured two other premium heifers—Mianna Miss Elly 103/2 for $9,000 and Mianna Miss Lizzie 102/2 for $8,000—averaging a total purchase price of $12,333.

James Salerno’s Vision for Salerno Pastoral
Salerno Pastoral, based in Beaudesert, Queensland, is a growing force in the Brahman cattle industry. Established in 2019, the stud, known as Rosegum Salerno Pastoral (SP), was co-founded by James Salerno and Professor Richard Drew, a globally recognized expert in fruit fly research. Professor Drew’s scientific expertise has played a key role in shaping the genetic foundation of their Brahman herd.

James Salerno’s journey into the cattle industry began in the Kimberley region, where he was raised surrounded by livestock. Today, he applies his extensive knowledge to breeding Brahmans with exceptional temperament, mobility, and resilience.

Commitment to High-Quality Brahman Genetics
Salerno Pastoral has carefully built a herd of 60 stud females and 250 commercial females across its Beaudesert and Esk properties. With a focus on premium bloodlines, including the renowned JD Hudgins’ Manso and V8 genetics, the operation ensures its cattle exhibit superior traits suited for the northern Australian beef industry.

Salerno emphasized that temperament was a major factor in choosing the heifers at the Gympie sale.

“I just love the temperament of these heifers, and it’s a credit to the breeders,” he said. “Appollo is an outstanding female, and she’ll grow out before being joined to a bull in 12 months. A strong temperament is the foundation of any great herd and carries through the production chain.”

These newly acquired heifers will soon be incorporated into Salerno Pastoral’s artificial insemination (AI) program, ensuring genetic excellence for future generations.

A Legacy of Innovation and Adaptability
James Salerno’s experience spans beyond cattle breeding. He is also a co-founder of the successful Australian clothing brand, Ringers Western. Despite his diverse business interests, his passion for cattle remains unwavering, particularly in navigating the unique challenges of the industry.

Operating in both Queensland and the Northern Territory, Salerno Pastoral faces harsh environmental conditions. On their Kununurra cattle station, the business contends with significant threats from saltwater crocodiles and scrub bulls, which contribute to high cattle mortality rates.

“We mostly lose weaners to crocodiles, but some of those bigger crocs will take a 500kg cow or bull,” Salerno explained. “Survival out here requires adaptability and resilience.”

Future Growth for Salerno Pastoral
Looking ahead, Salerno Pastoral aims to expand its stud herd to 150 cows, prioritizing quality over quantity. With a steadfast focus on premium genetics and sustainable breeding practices, James Salerno continues to strengthen his operation for long-term success in the Australian beef industry.

As Salerno Pastoral integrates new genetics and refines its breeding strategies, one thing is certain—James Salerno is dedicated to making a lasting impact in Brahman breeding, ensuring his herd remains at the forefront of the industry.
